Dual Group 1 Winner Vandeek leads standout season for Havana Grey
HAVANA GREY was responsible for the unbeaten Gr.1 Prix Morny and Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes winner Vandeek this term, trained by Simon and Ed Crisford. Bred by Kelly Thomas, at her Maywood Stud in Camarthenshire, the grey colt was originally sold as a foal for 52,000gns before being purchased by Roderic Kavanagh of Glending Stables the following year for 42,000gns. It was at the Craven Breeze-up Sale that he first came to wider attention when he was joint top lot at a price of 625,000gns when purchased by Anthony Stroud for owner KHK Racing. Prior to dual Gr.1 glory, he impressively won a Nottingham maiden and Gr.2 Richmond Stakes before cementing himself as one of Europe’s top 2yo’s with dual Gr.1 glory.
HAVANA GREY’s other leading progeny in 2023 include Gr.2 July Stakes winner Jasour, Gr.3 Prix de Cabourg victor Elite Status, Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes winner Mammas Girl and King Charles II Stakes scorer Shouldvebeenaring, who was also second in the Gr.1 Sprint Cup and third in the Gr.1 Prix de la Foret. To date, he has sired an exceptional 28 stakes performers and 15 Stakes winners from only two crops.
His top results on the racecourse was echoed in the 2023 sales season which saw yearlings sell for 600,000gns, 425,000gns, 320,000gns, 280,000gns, 240,000gns, etc.
